Halloween 2009

Friday was the halloween day at work. It was fun... Managed to give my costume a bit of a trial, and it was a success. I managed to creep out my fair share of work-a-day regular types. I did get a few people who recognized who I was. Sadly (and astonishingly) I was confused for such various types as The Invisible Man, the "boogie man", and... fer chrissakes... Michael Goddamned Myers. REALLY? Michael Myers? Eh. Then agian, Ive never kept in touch with the new or old movies, so who am I to know?

ah yes, the costume....

I made it from my old trenchcoat from back in high school, a skimask turned backwards, a cheap hat from the local fly-by-night halloween emporium, and dyed it with real ink. At 1st, I was a bit concerned with the ink bit. The fumes were overpowering at 1st, but after it dried out a bit, it became managable. seeing out of it was difficult, but not impossible, But yes, it was very hot and stuffy.

Saturday, I spent the afternoon doing odds and ends and watching halloween specials on DVD. I bought all sorts of chocolates, but sadly, there were no trick-or-treaters, damnit. I was expecting at least some of the little ninos, given the fact that they;re always running hear and there, screaming their heads off, etc. Ah well, more chocolate for me.

I went down to the riot room to see the Haunted Creepies, as well as parade my costume. I was hoping to go down there with Lisa, but she was busy in Columbia, etc etc. I didnt see too much creativity in costumes this year (then again, in my outfit, I really couldnt see much at all.) There was another Roarsarch there, in a costume that was far more professional and accurate there... and another one that was slightly cheaper than mine. But Im still satisfied with the reactions I got. I was even in character, skulking around bars, asking random people if they knew who killed Edward Blake. The Haunted Creepies were the main act, and they put on a fairly entertaining show. But yeah, with the place getting more and more crowded, the costume got more and more uncomfortable. So, being worn out, I went home.

So yeah, that's that there. Today, I watched Cronnenberg's The Fly, found out that I dont like that resteraunt built into that outdoors store in Olathe, and Played Final Fantasy X. That's it.

tonight, I drove down to Lawrence to see OPhil, being an old ska band from Wichita. Normaly, I dont like ska, but for Ophil, I gladly make an exception, given that they tend to be a bit heavier and a bit more metal than the average perky ska type bands, and they can do some awesome covers of a wide range of songs.

But yes, it was a great night, bringing back all sorts of memories of 1998. Cold crisp fall nights. Getting out of ~~work~~ school. Meeting people up at the show. Hearing them cover Paradise City and who knows what else at either the cabarete or the parrot-fa-nalia basement. Cruising around late night while listening to Rammstein's Herzeleid. the stars were even out too. The only thing missing was late night dinner from Spangles (only because, in Lawrence, they seem to close early)

But yeah, a great nostalgic evening. Where does the time fly?

Notable purchesses of the year included Slick Idiot's Screwtinized, Angelfish's self-titled album, Deftones' B-Sides, Cranes' Loved, and Birthday Massacre's Nothing and Nowhere.

Best new artist, at the time, was She Wants Revenge. In Retrospect, I would say it would be Silversun Pickups.

Discovery of the year would be Cranes, along with Nouvelle Vague.

2006 was a year of several notable concerts. Being a radical departure from living in Wichita, there was almost a show every month (or every other month) as opposed to a show every 90 days (if we were lucky) in Wichita.

Top concerts included Ladytron, The Ditty Bops, Gary Numan, GWAR, Nine Inch Nails, Frontline Assembly, Dresden Dolls, She Wants Revenge, Legendary Pink Dots, Slick Idiot, and of course, the notorious Depeche Mode show that is still referenced to this day.

Another departure from Wichita, was the variety of theatres. Of course, I was happy with the one theatre chain in Wichita (being of course the Warren), but with the variety (and size) of KC, also came a greater draw of lesser-run art-type films, and greater opportunity to catch them, as opposed to said films only being run for one weekend only. And then there of course also Screenland, which was doing a cheesey 80s movie of the month, complete with vintage trailers before the film.

I had no cable that year, so I didnt really watch alot of TV. But I did have DVDs, and I watched alot of those. Shows that I was watching that year included Taxi, The Munsters, The Tick, Metalocalpyse, Reno 911!, and The Venture Brothers.

There really wasnt alot in video games. I got Castlevania: Curse of Darkness in the early months, and Super Mario Sunshine in the springtime, but that was about it. The others, for the most part, were just reruns.

Pop culture trends? I remember 2006 was the year that the whole stupid "Chuck Norris Facts" thing got started. I also remember it as the year that Youtube exploded, and Myspace got even bigger. I got a new computer in the winter time that year, which enabled me for more effecient web-browsing, and being able to keep up online with the Joneses. I started frequenting Comic Book Universe Battles that year, and the Livejournal WTF community. With all the extra concerts going on that year, and me having a phone with a camera on it, I managed to be able to start bootlegging video from concerts. Which also brings the point that at this time, Megapixl cameras on cell phones (along with SD card expansion) was quickly becoming industry standard by this time.

There was a big scare about net neutrality during that year. And Iraq was probably at its lowest point during this time as well. And of course there was the unceranomial execution of Uncle Saddam that was captured on youtube as well. I also remember the ironic death of Steve Irwin, and the culture terror that was the Da Vinci code, and the cultural embarrassment that was Borat.

All in all, this was the year that I finaly caught up with the 2000s decade. With my old computer gone and having a high-tech phone and ipod, the last vestiges of the old decade and old ways were behind me, and I was up to date with the times (in style, if not in practice). Of course, having the shitty-assed apartment tieing me down, I was still not quite up to high standards of living, but, well, that was the end of the year anyway.
